Fritillaria meleagris, commonly known as Snake’s Head Fritillary or Checkered Lily, blooms in mid-spring with solitary or paired, nodding bell-shaped flowers marked by a distinctive maroon and pale purple checkered pattern. Slender, upright stems reach 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm) tall above grassy, gray-green foliage. Unlike many spring bulbs, it thrives in moist soils and naturalizes readily in damp meadows, lawn edges, or open woodland plantings through seed and bulb offsets. The bulbs are generally deer, rabbit, and rodent resistant. Hardy in zones 3 to 8.
